Ask MGMA: Why Mission, Vision and Values are the Foundation of Your Culture Playbook

Download MP3

Daniel Williams: Well, hi everyone.

Welcome to the MGMA Ask MGMA podcast.

This is part of the MGMA podcast network.

Uh, ASK MGMA is where we bring you
some of the latest tools, strategies,

and insights to help medical
practice leaders like yourself excel.

My name is Daniel Williams.

I'm a senior editor at
MGMA, host of the MGMA.

Uh, podcast Network.

We have joining us for Ask MGMA as
we always do, co-host Christy Goode,

who's a senior advisor at MGMA.

Christy, welcome yet again
to the Ask MGMA podcast.

I.

Cristy Good: Thank you for having me.

Daniel Williams: Yeah.

So today we are gonna be focusing
on a foundational element of

organizational success that is your
mission, vision, and values or MVV.

So, um.

We're gonna be discussing an exciting
new tool MGMA has released, as well

as upcoming playbooks that provide
practical guidance for leaders.

So let's just dive into that.

So Christie, let's start with.

Um, well, let's, let me
back up just a little bit.

You, you and I were talking offline.

We were talking about a lot of
things you're involved in right now.

You're doing a lot of MGMA tools that
many of our members may know about.

You're also working on playbooks.

If you don't mind just defining,
let's start, start with the playbooks.

If anybody listening doesn't know
what these new free MGMA member

benefits are, what are the playbooks.

Cristy Good: Sure.

Um, we just started putting together,
um, what we call playbooks that help

kind of give you, um, an overall
quick, kind of like for dummies, right?

Mm-hmm.

But playbook that says, here's.

Some resources.

Here's what you do in this instance,
and just quick resources, usually five

to seven pages with links to a number
of our tools that might be helpful so

that you can just have like a one stop.

Here's how I need to look at something,
and here are some of my answers.

And we've done a series
of, um, non-physician.

Playbooks for such as like staffing
and compensation and things like that.

And then we've done a physician
grouping of the same type of topics.

And coming up we will be re releasing
a culture playbook, a mission and

value, vision and values playbook,
uh, patient experience playbook.

Uh, cybersecurity playbook might already
be out there actually, since we just had

our cybersecurity certificate last week.

And, um, also, um, soon a
payer credentialing playbook.

Okay, so just quick resources that
link to more of our tools, tips,

tricks, um, to look at it quickly
so that you know, you don't have to

hunt through a number of resources.

Daniel Williams: So it's like
a one stop shop for any of

those topics you mentioned.

So you're not navigating here,
there, and everywhere trying

to find a particular topic.

You, you and your team have
really put the best of the best

into that one playbook, right?

Is that how it is?

Right.

Cristy Good: Yeah.

That's, that's our goal.

Daniel Williams: Awesome.

Alright, so

let's talk about mission, vision,
and values then this checklist.

What inspired its creation?

Um, how, how does it
benefit medical practices?

Tell us about that.

Cristy Good: Um, sure.

Uh, the checklist was designed to
provide a structured step by step process

for practices to develop or refine
their mission, vision, and values.

We realize that many organizations
understand the importance of MVV,

but struggle with where to start.

Okay.

Daniel Williams: Uh,

Cristy Good: this tool simplifies the
process, ensuring alignment with the

organizational goals in its culture.

It specifically, or especially is
useful, um, to help foster clarity

and engagement across teams.

Um, it started because I
started the culture playbook.

Part of the culture playbook was a little
segment on mission, vision, and values.

And then I was like, well, but there's so
much that goes into your mission and your

vision and your values, um, especially
when you're strategically planning.

And so from that, I started
the playbook on the MVB.

And from that I made a little
checklist to kind of help, a quicker

way to go through the process.

You know, for those that just want that
one tool to just help them real quickly.

Daniel Williams: Okay.

So you mentioned in this particular
checklist, it includes a detailed

step-by-step guide for developing,
uh, mission, vision, and values.

Um, I've looked at it, it
is incredibly impressive and

there are eight steps in total.

We're not gonna go through the whole, uh.

All the eight steps.

'cause that would take us a minute
to get through all of those.

Let's just start with
maybe the first two steps.

Talk about what they are
and what they entail.

Cristy Good: Sure.

The first step is all about
preparation and planning.

Um, it involves assembling a leadership
team, engaging stakeholders, setting

clear objectives, and reviewing
any existing MVV statements.

Um.

It, this helps ensure that
everyone is on the same page

before diving into the process.

Mm-hmm.

And key is look at what you have first.

Right.

In this process as well
as as you go forward.

Daniel Williams: Yep.

Cristy Good: And then the
second step really puts focus

on the data and collection.

So that data collection and
input, um, which is serving your

stakeholders and your stakeholders
are, you know, your staff.

Don't forget about your staff.

Mm-hmm.

Um, I think.

Many people think it's all leadership,
but it's also your staff, um, host

brainstorming sessions and then
analyze that feedback to identify

common themes and priorities.

Um, those initial steps really are
important because they'll lay the

groundwork for everything that follows.

Daniel Williams: Okay, well that
really does make a lot of sense.

So, um, it sounds like these steps are
designed to build a strong foundation

and ensure there's broad engagement.

I really like the idea that.

Don't just jump into what we've got
here, but actually examine what you have

existing and then how do you integrate,
what are what you already have to

some of the suggestions that we have.

So let's talk about involving
stakeholders early in the process.

You know, identifying those stakeholders
and then bringing them in so then

they can help impact the outcome.

Talk about that.

Cristy Good: Well, by bringing them
in early, it really, um, ensures

that your MVV reflects a diverse
group of perspectives and resonates

with everyone in the organization.

So really engaging everyone
at the beginning and not

just be like, here you go.

This is what we're doing now, right?

And we, you put it all together.

It really helps foster buy-in,
um, from the start making it

more likely that employees will
embrace and live out that MVV.

That is they're in their daily work.

Um, it also helps you identify blind
spots and opportunities where leadership

might not have seen it on their own.

So getting that broad view from
everyone is really important.

Daniel Williams: Okay.

So last few questions then.

So for our leaders listening
today, what advice would you

give them on implementing.

Um, a mission, mission, vision,
and values, uh, program into their

day to day operations, uh, and
integrate that into their practice.

How would you have them do that?

Cristy Good: I would make sure
that MVV or, you know, mission,

vision and values is part of
their every, every conversation.

Mm-hmm.

Um, and I know many places have it
posted, like in their break room or right.

In their work areas, um, incorporate
into your team meetings, um,

your training sessions, and even
your performance evaluations.

Um, I think that's a big piece of it
because people then know and are bought in

and see the value because it's also part
of what they're gonna be evaluated on.

Um, recognize that and re reward
employees that are, um, exemplifying

those values in their work.

Additionally communicate the
MVV externally through patient

interactions and marketing efforts.

Like this is what we stand for,
this is, this is what our vision

is, our mission is, and our
values are here at this practice.

And it just becomes then part
of the practices identity, both

internally and externally when
you do something like that.

Daniel Williams: Okay.

Um, looking ahead then, final question.

Looking ahead, how do you envision tools
like the checklist and playbooks shaping

the future of medical practice leadership?

You know, we kind of defined what these
checklists, what these playbooks are in

the first place, but in a real practical
sense, in a toolsy sense, how can that

help shape these practices and these
practice leaders and their success?

Cristy Good: Well, um, with these
resources, I think it helps the practice.

It gives them a roadmap to, um.

To sustain that process.

Okay.

Not only to develop it, but to sustain it.

And then by priority, prioritizing
your MVV and your workplace

cultures, leaders can navigate those
challenges more effectively and build

resilient, high performing teams.

And I know that, um, turnover in
medical practices lately has been high.

Mm-hmm.

If you get those good employees, you
wanna keep 'em, how do you engage 'em

by giving them, um, reason to be part of
your team by incorporating those mission,

vision, and values into their daily
work and having them feel pride in that.

Um.

Ultimately, you know, um, it's about
creating a legacy of care and excellence

that benefits both employees and patients.

I think that's key.

I think many times in healthcare you're
just thinking about the patients, but

your employees are a big part of that.

And your employees impact your
patient care, your patient experience.

Um, your patients wanting to come back.

To you.

So that's important too, as
you're building your practice and

keeping your practice, um, going.

It's, it's all one big circle.

Um, keep, you know, employees being part
of it and, and your patients feeling that.

Daniel Williams: Okay.

Well, Kristy Goode, senior advisor
at MGMA, thank you so much for

being a co-host on this show.

I clearly could not do this particular
show without you, and I just appreciate

all the work you do with our MGMA
members and help them, uh, answer

those questions when they go to that.

Big green button on the MGMA
website that says Ask MGMA.

Christie is among those experts
that answers those questions.

So, Christie, thanks for being here today.

Cristy Good: Well, thanks.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity
to share what we're doing and what we

have to offer our members, um, because
I think these tools are, and these

playbooks are great, um, benefits.

And instead of drinking from the
fire hose, you know, grab one of our

tools, grab a playbook, and yeah.

And, and hopefully that'll help you.

Daniel Williams: That's awesome.

Okay, so everybody listening today,
if you haven't already, check out the

mission, vision, and Values checklist.
